The Empty Chair (Ritual for Holidays and Gatherings)

When to Use It: On birthdays, Christmas, family meals, or any occasion where their absence echoes loudly.
Why It Matters: Ritualising their absence allows space for grief to sit at the table — instead of pretending it doesn’t exist.

Steps:

  1. Set an empty chair at the table or gathering space.

  2. Place something of theirs on the seat; a scarf, a flower, a photo.

  3. Invite loved ones to speak a memory aloud or in silence.

  4. Light a candle nearby, or toast in their honour.

  5. Leave the chair undisturbed throughout the gathering.

Optional Add-Ons:

  • Write them a letter and place it on the chair.

  • Play their favourite song.

  • Include a dish they loved.

Blessing:
“This space is not empty. It’s full of memory, love, and the ache of missing you. You are still part of this family, still part of this moment.”
